I am tempted to believe that film director Edward Zwick must have picked-up from the relationship shared by Remy and Fr. Murtaugh in Denis Murphy's "A Watch In The Night" to capture in the film "The Last Samurai" the relationship between Tom Cruise and Koyuki.
